Rotary Shaft Oil Seal
Oil seals, also known as lip seals, are commonly used in driveshafts, crankshafts and hydraulic cylinders where a rotating shaft is lubricated by oil or grease. The seal works like a cap, covering the clearance between the shaft and housing, stopping fluids from leaking whilst preventing contaminants from entering the chamber.
The sealing effect is achieved by preloading the sealing lip, making its internal diameter slightly smaller than the shaft diameter. The garter spring ensures constant pressure and maintains the radial force to the shaft, flattening the sealing edge to a defined width. Underneath this flattened area a thin fluid film is formed. The meniscus acts as an interface between the outside air and the fluid.
The most common elastomers: NBR, FKM (FPM, Viton), ACM (PA), Silicone, EPDM, PTFE, Leather
Design Types
This is a specially designed rotary shaft seal to be used for needle bearing applications. It is reinforced with steel insert and has a single thin lip without spring that, together with minimal interference, has low frictional loss. To fit better into the bore it has rubber waved outer diameter standard profile.
RB/RB9 Gamma Seals combine the ability of mechanical seals to work at high speed and the simplicity of oil seals. They provide a very good seal, reinforced through the action of the centrifugal force. They offer a high degree of sealing effect against contamination from grease, dirt, dust and/or water.
